My sentiments exactly, It is also difficult to convince them when they make frequent, what they call simple, changes that impact the design time, they have to be charged because of the time involved. I had a client who made 15 font changes. I was glad to have css to help me make it simple but it still took more time than it should have.

I agree, I don’t think people realize how much work and learning it takes to become a great web designer. But, nowadays anyone can throw up a quick Wordpress site, install a ecommerce plugin and BAM they have a nice looking online shop.

Hey that is exactly how I started out as a website designer too. It was way back when and I had no idea of coding but just went about copying from others, then gradually learnt what the code did too. These days I code in a few languages. Once you get into it it is a lot of fun.

“having taken a class in art and design is definitely a must”- no I do not believe this. To be a good web designer not always you have to take class of art but certainly a web designing tutorial like HTML,XTML, Java script is essential. Java is not necessary as a professional designer Java is more time taking.Knowing SEO is very much necessary today.

According to me a web designer should have a good artistic aptitude.a good design is just like a good picture.

Except the above point I agree to you.

Very nice post. It’s about time someone share the ups and downs of being a web designer to the general public! Seems like everyone thinks we have the easiest job in town; in most cases we do not. We work just as hard even though we don’t have the broken backs to show for it! I appreciate your post

I strongly agree with you in a sense where web design is not for everyone. Websites are a strong marketing tool and should be used in a way to express one’s message in a visually stimulating way.
